PWM Ministries > Orphan & Widow Care > La Providencia

La Providencia, our flagship community of care for orphans and widows, is located on 45 acres of land in beautiful Siguatepeque, Honduras (Central America). Presently under construction, La Providencia consists of

  • 12 family homes
  • a home for widows
  • a hospital
  • a school
  • a dining/multipurpose facility
  • a warehouse
  • an administrative building

Each of our 12 families will be comprised of 8 children and a Christian, Honduran couple/family. Because an estimated 20-30% of La Providencia’s children will be HIV+, our medical clinic will specialize in pediatric HIV/AIDS and hospice care. It will provide medical care not only for the children within La Providencia, but also for many families and children within the surrounding community of Aguas del Padre. Similarly, La Providencia’s school will educate our own 96 children, but also 96 children from the surrounding community. Finally, our widows’ home will care for 20 elderly widows, who will in turn serve as surrogate grandparents to La Providencia’s orphans as well as parental mentors to their parents.

The John Eaves Medical Clinic will concentrate on providing care for the various and severe health problems many of our children and widows will bring through our doors. Approximately 30% of the children will be HIV infected needing special treatment and, in some cases, hospice care. In addition, several times a year we will host medical brigades from the U.S. as they provide basic care for families from our surrounding community. Our hospital will have 17 beds, a small surgical unit and ambulatory service. It will be staffed by a medical director, a resident Honduran doctor, and a staff of nurses and interns from the X Medical School.

As mentioned above, our school will educate the children of La Providencia but also an equal number of children from the surrounding impoverished community of Aguas del Padre. Because many of the latter children are poverty stricken, we will identify and assign them to our school roster at an early age (1-2). By tracking and helping to provide for their basic social, nutritonal and other developmental factors prior to their actual enrollment, we will significantly improve their chances for success as students and future leaders. Like all quality schools in Honduras (those that these children would otherwise be unable to attend), we will enforce a strict dress code. We will do so to emphasize to the children that they are not second-class citizens in the Kingdom of God. If you would like to sponsor the education of an impoverished child from Aguas del Padre in our school, please complete a SPONSORSHIP APPLICATION or contact us for further information at:

La Providencia’s first home and hospital are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2006. At that time, we will begin receiving children and caring for the medical needs of the community.

Eventually, La Providencia will be completely run by Hondurans. Our goal is to trained Honduran professionals to manage the homes, hospital and school. First of all, this will help achieve true ownership by the Honduran community, insuring the long-term viability of La Providencia. Secondly, this will allow us to apply our missionary human resources toward the development of subsequent orphanages in other locations and nations. The land for LA PROVIDENCIA II, adjacent to La Providencia, has already been purchased, and we hope to begin construction on this second facility by 2010.
